Nitrofurantoin 100 mg Capsules
What is Nitrofurantoin used for:
Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic.
It is used to prevent and treat infections of the bladder, kidneys, and other parts of the urinary tract.
Do not take Nitrofurantoin:
- If you are allergic to Nitrofurantoin or other medicines containing Nitrofurantoin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
- If you have kidney disease.
- If you are in the final stages of pregnancy, as there is a risk it may affect the baby.
- If you suffer from a blood disorder called porphyria.
- If you have a deficiency in an enzyme called G6PD (Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase).
- If your child is less than three months old.
Warnings and Precautions:
Talk to your doctor before taking Nitrofurantoin:
- If you have diabetes.
- If you suffer from any disease causing severe weakness.
- If you suffer from anemia, Vitamin B deficiency, or abnormal levels of salts in your blood (your doctor will be able to advise you).
- If you have a history of allergies.
- If you have any kidney problems.
- If you lack the enzyme G6PD.
- If you have any disease of the lungs, liver, or nervous system.
Possible Side Effects:
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Dizziness
Other Medicines and Nitrofurantoin:
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all the medicines you are taking, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
Tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following:
- Antacids for indigestion (such as magnesium trisilicate).
- Gout medicines (such as probenecid or sulfinpyrazone).
- Medicines that slow food passage through the stomach (such as atropine and hyoscine).
- Medicines for high pressure in the eye, such as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (e.g., acetazolamide).
- Medicines that make the urine less acidic (such as potassium citrate mixture).
- Medicines for infections known as quinolones.
- Typhoid vaccine given for the prevention of typhoid.
How to take Nitrofurantoin:
Adult Use: Recommended dose
- To treat infections: Either one 50 mg capsule or one 100 mg capsule four times a day for seven days.
- To prevent further infections: Either one 50 mg capsule or one 100 mg capsule at bedtime.
- To prevent infections during surgery: One 50 mg capsule four times a day on the day of the operation and for three days thereafter.
Use in children and infants over three months: The dose depends on the child's weight and will be provided by your doctor.
Nitrofurantoin should always be taken with food or milk. Taking this medicine with food or milk makes it work more effectively.
How to store Nitrofurantoin:
- Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
- Do not store above 30°C.
- Store the medicine in its original container. Protect from moisture and light.
- Do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the outer carton. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
- Do not dispose of medicines via wastewater or household waste.
*The form and method of administration of Nitrofurantoin 50 mg, 100 mg capsules/tablets and Nitrofurantoin 25 mg/5 ml oral suspension should be prescribed according to the therapeutic indication and severity of the disease for each individual patient.
