Why Clarithromycin is used
Clarithromycin is used to treat or prevent infections caused by bacteria susceptible to Clarithromycin.
Do not take Clarithromycin
· If you are allergic to the active substances, the macrolide group, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
· If you are taking any of the following drugs: Cisapride, Pimozide, Astemizole, Terfenadine, Ergotamine or Dihydroergotamine, Lomitapide, Simvastatin, or Lovastatin.
· If you are taking Colchicine and suffer from kidney or liver disease.
· If you suffer from an irregular heartbeat known as long QT intervals.
Warnings and Precautions
Tell your doctor about all your health conditions, including if:
· You suffer from liver and/or kidney disease.
· You suffer from any heart problems.
· You have low levels of potassium and magnesium.
Use for longer than directed is prohibited. A secondary infection may occur.
This medicine may worsen symptoms of Myasthenia Gravis.
Possible Side Effects
Stop using this product and seek immediate medical attention if you develop a rash; itching; red, blistered, or peeling skin; tightness in the chest or throat; difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat. The frequency of these side effects is unknown.
Common side effects:
· Nausea
· Diarrhea
· Change in sense of taste
· Upset stomach
· Headache
· Changes in liver function
· Skin rash (in children)
Other Medicines and Clarithromycin
Clarithromycin interacts with many drugs. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking.
How to take Clarithromycin
· Take this drug as directed by your doctor.
· Take extended-release tablets with food.
· Swallow extended-release tablets whole. Do not chew, break, or crush.
· Dosages may vary depending on the site and severity of the infection.
· The usual dose is 500 mg every 12 hours. This is equivalent to 1 gram of an extended-release tablet once daily.
· For children, doses are calculated based on the child's body weight in mg/kg/day. The usual dose is 15 - 20 mg/kg/day.
How to store Clarithromycin
· Store at room temperature from 68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit (20 to 25 degrees Celsius).
· Keep away from light.
· Keep this medicine out of reach of children.
· Do not use this medicine after the expiration date stated on the box.
