Why Ciprofloxacin is used
Ciprofloxacin is used to treat or prevent infections caused by bacteria sensitive to ciprofloxacin.
What you need to know before using Ciprofloxacin
Do not take Ciprofloxacin
· If you are allergic to the active substances, any other quinolone antibiotics, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
· If you are taking the drug tizanidine.
Warnings and Precautions
Tell your doctor about all your health conditions, including if you have:
· Tendon problems.
· Heart problems, including heart failure (weak heart) or irregular heartbeat.
· Nervous system problems such as epilepsy or seizures.
· Nerve problems.
· Kidney problems.
· Liver problems.
· Rheumatoid arthritis or other joint problems.
· Myasthenia gravis.
· Diabetes.
· If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
This drug may cause inflammation or rupture of tendons or nervous system problems.
The risk of tendon inflammation or rupture increases in people over 60 years of age; heart, kidney, or lung transplant patients; or people taking steroid drugs.
The risk of joint problems increases in children under 18 years of age.
Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Possible Side Effects
Stop using this product and seek immediate medical attention if you develop a rash; itching; red, blistered, or peeling skin; chest or throat tightness; difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking; unusual hoarseness or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat. The frequency of these side effects is unknown.
Stop using this product and contact your doctor if you experience symptoms of tendon problems such as pain and swelling.
Serious Side Effects:
· Swelling and rupture of tendons
· Nervous system problems
· Nerve problems in the arms or legs
· Liver problems
· Irregular heartbeat and QT prolongation (corrected electrocardiogram)
· Worsening of myasthenia gravis
· Joint problems in children
Other Medicines and Ciprofloxacin
· Tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking. Ciprofloxacin interacts with a large number of drugs.
· Do not take Ciprofloxacin with tizanidine, as your blood pressure may drop and you may feel drowsy.
How to take Ciprofloxacin
· Take this drug exactly as your doctor has ordered.
· Take this drug at the same time each day.
· Take this drug with a full glass of water.
· Do not take the drug with dairy products such as milk or yogurt, or calcium-fortified juices.
· Swallow the tablets whole. Avoid chewing, breaking, or crushing.
· For adults: The usual dose is between 250 - 750 mg every 12 hours.
· For children: Doses are usually given according to the child's body weight in mg/kg/dose. It is usually between 10-20 mg/kg/dose every 12 hours.
How to store Ciprofloxacin
· Store at room temperature from 68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit (20 to 25 degrees Celsius).
· Keep this medicine out of reach of children.
· Do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the box.
