Why Captopril is used and its indications:
Captopril is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure (weak heart), kidney problems caused by diabetes, and to improve survival after a heart attack.
Do not take Captopril:
- If you are allergic to the active substances, other ACE inhibitors, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
- If you have ever experienced a very severe reaction involving swelling of the hands, face, lips, or tongue where the cause was unknown.
- If you have diabetes or impaired kidney function and are being treated with Aliskiren (a blood pressure-lowering medication).
- If you are more than 3 months pregnant.
Warnings and Precautions:
Tell your doctor about all your health conditions, including:
- If you suffer from liver problems.
- If you suffer from kidney problems or are undergoing dialysis.
- If you suffer from heart problems, especially heart valve issues.
- If you are taking medications that suppress your immune system.
- If you have recently suffered from excessive diarrhea or vomiting.
- If you suffer from diabetes.
- If you suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, or scleroderma.
- If you are taking ACE inhibitors or Aliskiren.
Possible Side Effects:
Stop using this product and seek immediate medical attention if you develop a rash; itching; red, blistered, or peeling skin; tightness in the chest or throat; difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat. The frequency of these side effects is unknown.
Serious Side Effects:
- Angioedema: Symptoms may include swelling of the hands, face, lips, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing.
Common Side Effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):
- Dizziness
- Skin rash
Other Medicines and Captopril:
Tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking, especially if you are taking:
- Other ACE inhibitors
- Blood pressure-lowering medications
- Aliskiren
- Diuretics (water pills)
- Potassium supplements
- Lithium (for mental illness)
- Immunosuppressant drugs
- Gout medications
- Medications for irregular heartbeat
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Sacubitril
How to take Captopril:
- Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
- Take this medication at the same time each day.
- Take this medication with or without food.
- The usual dose ranges between 6.25 - 25 mg, 2-3 times a day. Your doctor may increase it to a maximum of 150 mg per day.
How to store Captopril:
- Store at room temperature below 86°F (30°C).
- Keep this medicine out of reach of children.
- Do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the pack.
- Do not dispose of any medicines via wastewater or household waste.
