Metronidazole is used to treat bacterial infections of the vagina, stomach, liver, skin, joints, brain, spinal cord, lungs, heart, or bloodstream.
Metronidazole is also used to treat trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted disease caused by a parasite.
Usually, both sexual partners are treated at the same time, even if one shows no symptoms.
Do not use metronidazole to treat any condition that has not been examined by your doctor.
Instructions for Use:
Take metronidazole exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets.
Metronidazole is taken orally.
Intravenous injection is administered by a healthcare provider if you are unable to take the medication by mouth.
Shake the oral suspension (liquid) well before use.
Measure the dose with the provided measuring device (not a kitchen spoon).
Swallow the extended-release tablet whole; do not crush, chew, or break it.
If you are treating a vaginal infection, your sexual partner may also need to take metronidazole to prevent reinfection.
Metronidazole is usually given for up to 10 consecutive days.
You may need to repeat this dose after several weeks.
Continue using this medication even if symptoms improve quickly.

For oral dosage forms (tablets or suspension syrup):
For Amoebiasis infection:
Adults:
500 or 750 mg 3 times daily for 5 to 10 days.
Children:
Dosage depends on body weight and must be determined by a doctor. The dose usually ranges from 35 to 50 milligrams (mg) per kilogram (kg) of body weight per day, divided into 3 doses, for 10 days.
For Bacterial Infections:
Adults:
Dosage depends on body weight and must be determined by a doctor. The dose is usually 7.5 mg per kilogram of body weight every 6 hours for 7 to 10 days. Your doctor may increase the dose as needed. However, the dose usually does not exceed 4000 mg per day.
Children:

For Trichomoniasis infection:

The tablet can be given in 3 different ways:
1. As a single 2-gram dose.
2. 1 gram twice a day for 1 day.
3. 250 mg 3 times a day for 7 days.

750 milligrams (mg) once daily for 7 days.

Warnings and Precautions:
Metronidazole will not treat a vaginal yeast infection. You may develop a new vaginal yeast infection, which may need to be treated with antifungal medication.
Tell your doctor if you have symptoms such as itching or discharge during or after treatment with this medication.
Do not share this medication with another person, even if they have the same symptoms as you.
This medication can affect the results of certain medical tests. Tell any doctor treating you that you are using this medication.
