Antibacterial Medicines
Mechanism of Action of Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid
Penicillin kills bacteria by binding its beta-lactam ring to transpeptidase, the enzyme responsible for building the bacterial cell wall, thereby preventing cell wall formation. Without a cell wall, the bacterial cell becomes vulnerable to external water and molecular pressures, leading to bacterial death.
Amoxicillin is similar to penicillin in its bactericidal action.
Clavulanic acid belongs to a class of drugs called beta-lactamase inhibitors, which is an enzyme produced by bacteria to destroy certain antibiotics. Thus, it works by preventing bacteria from destroying amoxicillin.
