Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole / Trimethoprim) is a combination antibiotic containing sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. These two medications work together to inhibit a specific chemical that certain bacteria need to grow.
Once this chemical is blocked, the bacteria stop growing and reproducing.
Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole / Trimethoprim) is used for:
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs).
- Traveler's diarrhea in adults.
- Middle ear infections (Otitis Media) in children.
- Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis in adults.
- Pneumonia in immunocompromised individuals.
- Prevention of pneumonia in immunocompromised individuals.
- Shigellosis (fever and diarrhea caused by Shigella bacteria).
Usage Instructions:
- Take this medication in the dose and duration prescribed by your doctor.
- Check the label for directions before use.
- Measure with a measuring cup and take orally.
- Shake well before use.
- Bactrim syrup should be taken with food.

- This medication may interfere with the effectiveness of live bacterial vaccines (such as the typhoid vaccine).
- Inform your healthcare professional that you are using this medication before receiving any vaccinations.
- This medication may increase your sensitivity to sunlight.
- Limit your time in the sun.
- Avoid tanning beds and sunlamps.
- Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors.
- Seek medical help immediately if you get a sunburn or experience skin blistering/redness.
